There are many different ways to make balloon flags. The same balloon fabric can be used to make different balloon sculptures, such as hats. Previously we have made different variations of tricolor hats: Uncle Sam balloon hat, simple version of Uncle Sam balloon hat, Balloon rainbow hat (yeah, with three colors!), and there are many more. Today I want to make probably one of the simplest versions using three balloons. It may work for flags with either horizontal or vertical stripes (Pic 1 and 2). I choose national colors of France - the same colors in different order represents different nations (USA and Russia just to name).

Inflate all balloons leaving about 11 cm flat tails (Pic 3).

I am going to twist all large bubbles of the same size about 10 cm. You should adjust the size of large bubbles based on the size of the hat you want to make: for larger hat make larger bubbles and vise verse.  Twist the first blue large bubble (Pic 4).

Tie nozzle of the white balloon to the free end of the first blue bubble. Twist the first white large bubble (Pic 5).

Tie the nozzle of the red balloon to the free end of the first white bubble (Pic 6).

We are going to twist all small bubbles of the same size about 2 - 3 cm. Twist the small blue bubble. Twist the large blue bubble. Twist the small white bubble (Pic 7).

Lock the free end of the last large blue bubble with the free end of the small white bubble. Twist the large red bubble. Twist the small red bubble. Twist the large white bubble (Pic 8).

Lock the free end of the last large white bubble with the free end of the red small bubble (Pic 9).

Cut off nicely the rest of the blue balloon without deflating it and tie off the end. We are going to use rest of the balloons to make the rest parts of the sculpture. Tie the rest part of the blue balloon between the large and the small red bubbles (Pic 10).

Cut off nicely the rest part of the white balloon and tie off the end. Twist the large blue bubble. Tie the rest part of the white balloon to the free end of the last large blue bubble (Pic 11).

Twist the large red bubble. Twist the small blue bubble. Lock the free end of the last large red bubble with the free end of the last small blue bubble (Pic 12).

Cut off nicely the rest of the red balloon and tie off the end. Twist the large white bubble. Tie the rest of the red balloon with the free end of the last white bubble. Twist the small white bubble. Twist the large blue bubble (Pic 13).

Lock the free end of the last large blue bubble with the free end of the last small white bubble (Pic 14).

Twist the large red bubble. Lock the free end of the last large red bubble with the nozzle of the blue balloon (Pic 15).

Twist the large white bubble. Twist the small red bubble (Pic 16).

Lock the free end of the last large white bubble with the free end of the last small red bubble (Pic 17).

Twist the large red bubble (Pic 18).

Lock the free end of the last large red bubble between the small and large red bubbles (Pic 19 and 20).

Cut off the rest of the balloons and tie off the ends (Pic 21 - 27). Congratulations! We have made tricolor balloon hat or tricolor balloon flag using just three balloons. You can make the same sculpture using 6 balloons - and there are many different designs based on this sculpture. Once again, I suggest you to check out the previously published instruction Rainbow balloon hat for some ideas. Have fun and happy twisting :)
