CLASSICAL: Music balloon notes

Supplies: balloons, an air pump, scissors, clear sticky tape and sewing thread.

In previous instruction we made the balloon treble clef. Today I want to make some other musical signs. Inflate balloon leaving about 7 cm flat tail (Pic 1).

Twist the first about 25 cm bubble (Pic 2).

Lock both ends of the first bubble in one lock twist. Twist the second and the third about 3 cm bubbles (Pic 3).

Lock all ends of the second and the third bubbles in one lock twist. Congratulations, we have made the half note!

We can adjust the size of the last ( the fourth) bubble as necessary (Pic 5).

Inflate a balloon leaving about 7 cm flat tail. Twist the first about 25 cm bubble. Lock both ends of the first bubble in one lock twist (Pic 6).

Twist the second about 20 - 25 cm bubble (Pic 7).

Lock both ends of the second bubble in one lock twist (Pic 8).

Force the smaller bubble inside of the loop of the larger bubble. In this example I force the second bubble inside of the loop of the first bubble (Pic 9).

Twist the third and the fourth about 3 cm bubbles (Pic 10).

Lock all ends of the third and the fourth bubbles in one lock twist (Pic 11). Congratulations, we have made the balloon quarter note.

We can adjust size of the last (the fifth) bubble as necessary and cut off the rest of the balloon. I am going to use the rest of the balloon to make quaver or eight note. Twist the fifth about 25- 35 cm bubble. Twist the sixth and the seventh about 3 cm bubbles. The rest of the balloon is the eighth bubble (Pic 12).

Lock all ends of the sixth and the seventh bubbles in one lock twist. Fix all bubbles in proper positions. You may bend the eighth bubble to shape it properly. Congratulations, we have made the balloon eighth note (Pic 12).

In the following example we are going to make beamed notes. Inflate balloons leaving about 6 - 7 cm flat tails (Pic 14).

Twist the first about 12 cm bubble (Pic 15).

Lock both ends of the first bubble in one lock twist. Twist the second and the third about 3 cm bubbles (Pic 16).

Lock all ends of the second and the third bubbles in one lock twist (Pic 17). Congratulations again, we have made the balloon quarter note. We can use it as it is.

In this example I made the fourth about 20 cm bubble. Then I locked both ends of the fourth bubble in one lock twist. Insert the first bubble inside of the loop of the fourth bubble. We made the same quarter note as we did previously. You have to make two quarter notes. The stems or the tails of the notes could be of different sizes (Pic 18).

Twist the fifth about 18 cm bubble. Twist the sixth about 3 cm bubble (Pic 19).

Lock both ends of the sixth bubble in one lock twist. We can attach the second note to the end of the first note to make one beamed notes. Or we can made double beamed notes. Let's prepare the second note in the same way as we did the first note. There is only one important difference. Twist the fifth bubble of the second note about 25 cm long (Pic 20).

Let's work with the second note (with the long fifth bubble). Twist the seventh about 15 cm bubble. Twist the eighth about 3 cm bubble. The rest of the balloon is the ninth bubble. Make sure the ninth bubble is at least 8 cm (or more) long (Pic 21).

Lock both ends of the eighth bubble in one lock twist (Pic 22).

Make sure the combine length of the ninth bubble of the second note and the fifth bubble of the first note is about the same as the fifth bubble of the second note (Pic 23).

Lock the free end of the ninth bubble of the second balloon with the sixth bubble of the first balloon (Pic 24).

Twist the seventh about 3 cm bubble of the first balloon (Pic 25).

Lock both ends of the seventh bubble in one lock twist (Pic 26).

Twist the eighth bubble of the first balloon of the same size as the seventh bubble of the second balloon. Twist the ninth and the tenth about 3 cm bubbles (Pic 27).

Lock all ends of the ninth and the tenth bubbles of the first balloon in one lock twist. Split the fifth bubble of the second balloon on two parts. Make sure the long part of the fifth bubble of the second balloon is about the same size as the fifth bubble of the first balloon (Pic 28)

Lock the end of the first balloon between bubbles of the stem of the second note (Pic 29). Congratulations, we have made the double beamed quarter note.

We can attach symbols to each other with sewing thread and /or clear sticky tape (Pic 30). In this example I am using one sided sticky tape. You can use double sided sticky tape.

Inflate five balloons and attach them to a wall in horizontal lines to form musical staff (Pic 31). In this example I wrap sewing thread over each balloon on one side. Then wrap sewing thread over each balloon the the other side. Stick ends of sewing thread to the wall with clear sticky tape (Pic 31). Congratulations, we have made the musical staff.
