Many years back I saw first time the sculpture of two kissing dogs made of one balloon. I was very impressed by the level of skills of the balloon twister who made the sculpture. I tried to replicate the same balloon sculpture as soon as I got home. I couldn't make it! Back then I could't make 26 bubbles of the same size from one balloon. It took me many attempts before I made my first two kissing dogs from one balloon using total of 24 bubbles. Eventually, I learned to make more than 24 bubbles. The sculpture looks simple on the first glance. Don't let it fool you! You have to make many small size bubbles and all bubbles should be of the same size. You have to use entire balloon to make the sculpture - the last bubble of the sculpture should be the end of the balloon - there is no flat tail left after the last bubble. It is very challenging no matter how many bubbles we use for the sculpture. We can make 2 dogs out of one balloon using different number of bubbles: 9 is the least possible number of bubbles to make the simplest dog (1 for the tail, 2 for the rear legs, 1 for the body, and 3 for the head). Total it would take 18 bubbles to make 2 simplest dogs out of one balloon. In the following instruction I use total of 30 bubbles to make 2 dogs (poodles) - trying to push limits of my balloon twisting skills to the extreme. This balloon sculpture is a benchmark of my personal balloon twisting skills. I make this sculpture as a warm up exercise after weekly long breaks I have from balloons. It helps me to get myself quickly in the working shape. Whether you are professional balloon twister, amateur or beginner - making this balloon sculpture will boost your confidence and self esteem.
Inflate a balloon leaving about 23 cm flat tail (Pic 1).
The inflated part of the balloon should be about 20 cm long (Pic 2).
We are going to twist all 30 bubbles of the same about 2 cm size. Twist a chain of the first five bubbles (Pic 3).
Lock both ends of the chain of the last four bubbles in one lock twist (Pic 4 and 5). We have made the tail and the rear legs of the first dog.
Twist a chain of the next five (the 6th through the 10th) bubbles (Pic 6).
Lock both ends of the chain of the last four (the 7th through the 10th) bubbles in one lock twist (Pic 7). We have made the front legs of the first dog. At this point the sculpture looks as a baby giraffe!
Twist a chain of the next four (the 11th through the 14th) bubbles (Pic 8).
Lock both ends of the chain of the last three (the 12th through the 14th) bubbles in one lock twist (Pic 9). We have made the neck and the head of the first dog.
Twist the 15th bubble. It is the muzzle of the first dog. Congratulations! We have made the first dog. The first dog we work starting from the tail. The second dog we work starting from the muzzle. It is only difference. Twist the chain of the next four (the 16th through the 19th) bubbles (Pic 10).
Lock both ends of the chain of the last three (the 17th through the 19th) bubbles in one lock twist (Pic 11). We have made the head of the second dog.
Twist a chain of the next five (the 20th through the24th) bubbles (Pic 12).
Lock both ends of the chain of the last four (the 21st through the 24th) bubbles in one lock twist (Pic 13). We made the front legs of the second dog.
Twist a chain of the next five (the 25th through the 29th) bubbles. The rest of the balloon is the 30th bubble. The 30th bubble should be of the same size as any other bubble of the sculpture. And there should not be any flat tail at the end of the balloon (Pic 14).
Lock both ends of the chain of the last four (the 26th through the 29th) bubbles in one lock twist. We have made the body and the rear legs of the second dog. The rest of the balloon is the 30th bubble - it is the tail (Pic 15 through 19). Congratulations! We have made two kissing dogs (poodles) from one balloon. We can fix the dogs in proper positions in different ways. We can attach them to different balloon sculptures, a simple balloon hat. In this example I put both dogs on one plastic drinking straw. You have to force the plastic straw between legs of both dogs. Have fun and happy twisting :)
